This follows a disputed July election in which both Maduro and the opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez claimed victory.
The United States recognized Gonzalez as the winner of the presidential election, saying “the Venezuelan people overwhelmingly and unequivocally expressed their desire for democratic change,” and said it “strongly condemns Maduro’s decision to use repression and intimidation to cling to power.”
