During a media briefing on global health issues, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros addressed the United States’ intention to withdraw from the organization. While Tedros expressed ‘regret’ at the move from the US, he also raised concerns about the ‘serious impact’ of decisions from the government unrelated to the withdrawal, such as its suspension of foreign aid, which he noted caused an ‘immediate stop’ to HIV prevention services in countries around the globe. The director also noted that they now have limited data from the US concerning the spread of avian influenza within the country, and asked for funding to be continued until solutions could be found.
