1:01Now PlayingA powerful dust storm swept through southern New Mexico on March 3, causing multiple vehicle crashes and leaving drivers with zero visibility on major highways. Footage from Fire Chief Justin Powell shows wrecked cars and thick dust engulfing the roads. Officials temporarily closed Highway 285 between Roswell and Artesia and warned drivers to avoid travel, especially along New Mexico State Road 2 near Dexter and Hagerman.
The National Weather Service issued a blowing dust advisory and high wind warning, with gusts reaching 65 mph and visibility dropping to just half a mile in some areas. Watch the dramatic footage of the storm’s impact.
