Thousands of mourners packed into St. Peter’s Square Saturday morning for the funeral of Pope Francis.

The pontiff, who served 12 years as the head of the Catholic church, was remembered as a man of the people and uncompromising in his calls for equality.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the mass, recalling that Francis was known for his calls for peace and reason, “inviting honest negotiation to find possible solutions.”
