2:42Now PlayingBorder czar Tom Homan said Monday that President Trump’s proposal to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison could help Immigration and Customs Enforcement solve a shortage of detention space amid the administration’s deportation push.
Reopening Alcatraz — which closed in 1963 and has operated as a museum since — “should be on the table,” Homan told reporters outside the White House.
“We need detention beds. We do contracts in a lot of states, a lot of local municipalities. I think it’s certainly an option, especially for the significant public safety threats, national security threats,” he explained.
