1:00Now PlayingA volcano in far-east Russia erupted for the first time since the 15th century on Saturday evening, August 2, producing a plume of ash and smoke up to six kilometers (3.7 miles) high, authorities reported.
The Krasheninnikov volcano – one of eight active volcanoes located in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve on the Kamchatka Peninsula - last erupted around 1463, according to the Russian Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Aerial footage from Artem Sheldovitsky, a mountain guide working for Snow Valley, a local tour company, shows the eruption continuing on Sunday.
According to local media, a volcanologist from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexey Ozerov, said the eruption was directly connected to an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that shook the Kamchatka Peninsula a few days earlier on July 30.
The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team said the plume was drifting eastward out over the Pacific Ocean, and that no populated areas were being impacted by the eruption.
Staff at the Kronotsky Nature Reserve said emissions are currently reaching a height of 5-6 km above sea level, and part of the reserve’s territory is covered with ash deposits.
Activity also increased in two other volcanoes on the peninsula with experts warning that one of them, the Kambalny volcano, may also be in the early stages of an eruption, reports said.
