2:04Now PlayingScary bodycam reveals the moment a Berkeley County officer collapsed to the ground in a panic, after she conducted a search on a woman and found a dollar bill in her bra containing an unknown substance. The incident unfolded in South Carolina on July 26 when Lt. Kristin Riddle and another deputy responded to a call, about a woman who was unconscious behind the wheel of a car. Riddle was conducting a search when she was exposed to the substance and started yelling for Narcan. After receiving two doses, she was rushed to a hospital, and is now home recovering, according to Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis, who says that she was exposed to fentanyl.
“I think it was because of the excessive heat of the day, but normally she would have had gloves on… and should have had gloves on,” he said.
Many experts have said that overdose from such an exposure is unlikely, including the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services,
whose website reads “The risk of clinically significant exposure to emergency responders is extremely low” … and “To date, there have been no documented nor confirmed cases of overdoses among first responders in North Carolina through occupational exposure via routine duties.”
