But behind the embraces, the truth about the isolation, starvation and abuse that the hostages endured during their two years in Hamas captivity is now coming out. The family of Israeli Defense Forces soldier Matan Angrest revealed chilling details of his ordeal – after he was taken as prisoner from his military tank on Oct. 7, 2023. The now-22-year-old was once beaten so savagely by his captors that he blacked out. During the last four months of captivity, he was confined to a dark tunnel. Amid IDF airstrikes on Gaza, tunnel walls collapsed around him and “many times they found themselves buried in dust under the rubble, trying to climb out and survive.”
