REFERENDUM IN ARMENIA

The issue of constitutional amendments has heated up social networks!

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian signed a decree to hold a referendum on constitutional amendments on April 5, 2020.

Earlier, the Armenian parliament passed a resolution on holding a referendum: 88 MPs voted for the bill, with 15 MPs against it.

According to the draft for the referendum, Article 213 of the Constitution shall be amended so that the powers of the CC judges who are elected before April 2018 shall be terminated.

SOLDIER DIES IN ARTSAKH

A soldier Valery Petrosyan, 19, has died in Artsakh under unknown circumstances, Artsakh Defense Ministry press service reported.

The military soldier, private was found unconscious on Sunday. He was taken to a military hospital, where his death was ascertained.

Criminal case has been launched into his death.

SOLDIERS STUCK UNDER AVALANCHE

Another four Armenian soldiers were stuck Friday under an avalanche in Armenia’s Syunik Province.

The bodies of three servicemen were found after search and rescue efforts. The other soldier was brought out of the snow, has injuries, and his health condition is satisfactory.

ARMENIA OFFICIAL ARRESTED

The court has granted the investigator's motion to arrest Vahagn Vermishyan, Chair of the Armenian Urban Development Committee.

Earlier, within the criminal case initiated by the NSS into taking large-scale bribe, the crime suspects were apprehended, two of them—including Vermishyan—were detained.

ILLEGAL DRUG SMUGGLING

The NSS has uncovered another case of large-scale illegal drug smuggling into the country.

By order of two acquaintances living in Yerevan, an Armenian citizen in Russia illegally obtained large quantities of drugs which he hid in a secret compartment in an electric saw, and on January 25, in Moscow, he transferred them in a bag to driver of a van carrying cargo to Armenia.

On February 3, these drugs were imported to Armenia, however, the customers were detained.

SLOVENIA ON EU-ARMENIA DEAL

On  February 5, Slovenia has notified the General Secretariat of the European Council and the Council of the European Union (EU) about the completion of its internal procedures necessary for the ratification of the Armenia-EU deal, Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan wrote on her Facebook.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

Coronavirus death toll has reached 910, and 97 new deaths were recorded only in the last day.

All but two deaths are recorded in mainland China. One death has been reported in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

There are 40 553 confirmed cases of infection, of which 6494 are in critical condition and 3324 patients recovered.

OSCAR 2020

The 92nd Academy Awards (Oscars) has ended in Los Angeles.

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's Parasite became the evening’s sensation. This social drama won an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and International Feature Film. For the first time ever, a foreign film has won the highest award of the film academy.

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt finally won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as the Joker in Todd Phillips' same-name movie. Joker, by the way, received its first Oscar in best Music (Original Score).

And the Oscar for best Music (Original Song) went to Elton John’s "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" soundtrack from Rocketman.
