JUDGES ELECTED
The Armenian parliament on Tuesday elected by secret ballot the three candidates who were nominated as judges to the Constitutional Court (CC).
General Assembly of Judges’ nominee Yervand Khundkaryan received 84 votes, President’s nominee Artur Vagharshyan received 86 votes, and the government’s nominee Edgar Shatiryan received 85 votes.
Three seats in the CC had become vacant as a result of constitutional amendments when the powers of the three members who had served for over 12 years were terminated.
Once the composition of the CC is complemented, its members will elect the new president the court.
COVID-19 IN ARMENIA
As of 11 am on Tuesday, 150 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Armenia, and the total number of these cases has reached 46,119.
Also, one more death from COVID-19 was reported, making the respective total 920 cases.
The total number of people recovered so far is 41,941, and the number of people currently being treated is 2,975.
And 2,761 COVID-19 tests were conducted in Armenia over the past one day, while 243,704 such tests have been performed to date.
KOCHARYAN COURT HEARING
Tuesday’s court session on the criminal case against the second president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan and several other former senior officials was being held behind closed doors.
The previous hearing on September 8 was also a closed session. At that hearing, defense attorney Aram Vardevanyan had filed a motion with the court to revoke the attachment on the former president's property and bank accounts and had submitted a respective expert assessment to the court. However, the lawyer had requested a closed hearing, and the court had granted this request.
OSCE ON ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN
The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs today held intensive consultations in Paris along with Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk and discussed the new developments following the escalation of violence on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border in mid-July.
The Co-Chairs held personal talks with FMs of Armenia and Azerbaijan Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Jeyhun Bayramov and invited the ministers to meet with the Co-Chairs in person individually over the next few weeks to further specify their positions to resume serious and substantive talks without preconditions.
UAE TIGHTENS REQUIREMENTS
The United Arab Emirates has tightened requirements for the issuance of visas to citizens of Armenia.
As a travel agency told Armenian News-NEWS.am, from now on, besides the copy of a passport and a photo, citizens of Armenia will need to submit a letter of commitment to leave the country on time, confirm a booking or the particular hotel or indicate the place for future residence, an excerpt from the military for the past six months and a ticket for return. The requirements apply to all family members, except for children.
