CHINA, RUSSIA

Fifty years after Nixon and Mao’s historic handshake, the geopolitical world order is again being reshaped.

The leaders of China and Russia meet in Beijing this Friday shortly before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have signed a joint statement on international relations.

“Russia and China oppose the actions of external forces to undermine security and stability in common adjacent regions, intend to resist the interference of external forces under any pretext in the internal affairs of sovereign countries, oppose “color revolutions” and will increase cooperation in the above-mentioned areas ", the two leaders said in a statement.

“Putin appreciates Chinese public expressions of support for Russia’s position on Ukraine that demonstrate the Kremlin is not isolated internationally,” Putin added. “For China, Putin’s visit is an important demonstration of support at a time when the US, UK, and other countries are undertaking a diplomatic boycott of the Games.”

MEETING

The next meeting of special representatives of Armenia and Turkey Ruben Rubinyan and Serdar Kilic within the Armenia-Turkey relations normalization process will be held in Vienna on 24 February.

OLYMPICS

The opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympics has started in the Chinese capital, Beijing.

The flag bearers of the Armenian delegation at the opening ceremony will be figure skater Tina Garabedian and skier Mikayel Mikayelyan.

More than 4,000 representatives from 95 countries will take part in the 2022 Winter Olympics is in Beijing.

A total of 109 sets of medals will be up for grabs in 15 competitions in 7 sports.

The opening ceremony of the Games is taking place at the Beijing National Stadium, where the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics was held, too.

COVID-19

The COVID-19 situation is becoming more tense in Armenia.

As of Friday morning 4,192 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Armenia, and the total number of these cases has reached 383,458 in the country.

Ten more death has been recorded in a day bringing the death toll 8,075.

EUROPE

Europe is now entering the probable endgame of the pandemic, with coronavirus deaths starting to plateau, said director of the European office of the World Health Organization Hans Kluge, AP reported.

Countries in Europe have an extraordinary opportunity to bring COVID-19 under control, he said, thanks to three factors: high immunization rates through vaccination and natural infection, the propensity for the virus to spread less in warmer weather, and the lower severity of the omicron variant.

Even if another option comes up, Kluge said, health authorities in Europe should be able to keep it under control, as long as immunization measures continue along with other public health measures.

SMOKING

Smoking in all public catering establishments, including open-air (cafeterias, restaurants, cafes, bars, buffets, and other culinary establishments) will be banned in Armenia, as of March 15.

PARLIAMENT

Armenia parliament opposition has decided not to take part in the presidential elections.

The Constitution of Armenia requires that the President of the Republic shall be impartial, guided by nationwide and pan-national interests, the opposition "Armenia" Bloc noted this in a statement released Friday.

"Armenia is facing serious internal and external challenges today.

There is no alternative to nationwide unity, public solidarity," the statement added.
