NEWS.am digest: 105 Armenian soldiers die in Azerbijani attack

105 Armenian soldiers have died in the Azerbaijani attack on Armenia, PM Nikol Pashinyan said Wednesday at the parliament session. He said this number only includes those whose identities have been confirmed.

On Tuesday, Azerbaijan launched an attack, using artillery, mortars, drones and large-caliber rifles near border positions in and around several towns and villages, including Vardenis, Sotk, Artanish, Ishkhanasar, Goris, and Kapan.

The Armenian defense ministry said the attacks had targeted both military and civilian infrastructure.

Although the Russian MFA said that thanks to its mediation, Armenian-Azerbaijani side has reached the ceasefire, the Armenian defense ministry said that as of 3pm Wednesday, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has become extremely tense again.

“Along with the missile and artillery strikes, the Azerbaijani army units have started the attempts of positional advancement. The Armed Forces of Armenia are undertaking all necessary measures to properly respond to the adversary,” the defense ministry noted.

Pashinyan also noted that as a result of the invasion, Azerbaijan has occupied 10 square kilometers of Armenia.

“An aggression has taken place, and we say that we will not accept that aggression, they should leave our country. That is our political position," the PM added.

Pashinyan said Armenia appealed to the CSTO on the basis of Article 4 of the Collective Security Treaty. "It says that aggression against one member state is also considered aggression against other states. Saying that Azerbaijan carried out aggression against us, we mean that it also established control over a certain territory of Armenia. We applied to the CSTO for assistance and support, including military support to restore the territorial integrity of Armenia and ensure the withdrawal of Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the territory of Armenia," the PM added

FM Ararat Mirzoyan today, in turn, noted that the CSTO observation mission will arrive in Armenia tomorrow.

The FM added that the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Armenia was met with strictly targeted condemnation by the international community in most cases.

In an interview with Reuters, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said there is a clear risk that clashes with Azerbaijan could escalate into war.

Paruyr Hovhannisyan called on major powers to pay more attention to the seriousness of the situation, which, he said, could lead to another major conflict in the former Soviet Union.

Speaking about Armenian-Russian relations, the deputy minister said, "We have a military arrangement - it's our major military partner - and there are certain provisions which we asked it to exercise," Hovhannisyan said.

The flare-up in violence has triggered international concern. Russia, the United States, France and the European Union have been calling for restraint and stepping up diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday said Russia could either "stir the pot" or use its influence to help "calm the waters".

He held separate calls with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijaini President Ilham Aliyev to urge a ceasefire, and in particular expressed concern about shelling deep in Armenia.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, in a call with her counterparts from both countries, also called for the "end of strikes against Armenian territory".

EU Special Representative Toivo Klaar was due in the south Caucasus on Wednesday to facilitate dialogue.
