Mississippi's fourth-graders are ranked first for reading and second in math when adjusted for demographics, according to a national assessment. This is a huge jump from where they were before — a decade ago, they were ranked 49th in reading.

Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, said on "Morning in America" that parents taking their students' education seriously helped.
