For decades, these treatments were viewed with fear after a 2002 study linked HRT to breast cancer. Though the study was narrow and incomplete, it led millions of women to stop treatment. The FDA now says it’s time to end the stigma, noting that HRT can reduce risks of heart disease, bone fractures, cognitive decline and more. Makary says the goal is to “stop the fear machine” and help women reclaim a safe, effective therapy that could save lives.
