Lownie says William has been urging Charles to address Andrew’s scandals for years, but Charles, like the late queen, avoids confrontation and remains bound by a personal promise to “take care of” his brother. The result, he argues, is a crisis of the palace’s own making — one that has forced the royals to answer uncomfortable questions about privilege, hidden benefits and long-ignored warnings.
While Lownie doesn’t believe this will end the monarchy, he says public support is at a historic low, and Charles’s indecision has made him look weak, damaging his legacy. Surrounded by “yes men,” he has allowed the crisis to metastasize — a classic case of too little, too late.
