They say people are always surprised to see them. In areas like the city's west side, one firefighter says they get to interact with a lot of kids that look like them.
"I think that's important for those kids to see us. A full crew, full of African-American firefighters, being out there, serving the community." Another crew member echoes that sentiment, saying, "I know I didn’t see that growing up. And maybe I would have gotten into this earlier if I was able to see it."
