Thursday, White House border czar Tom Homan announced the White House was concluding its surge of ICE agents in Minnesota and praised the administration’s partnership with Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. However, after the shooting deaths of two civilians at the hands of federal agents, was the operation worth it? Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration shut down the airport in El Paso, Texas, over concerns they’d spotted a drone used by Mexican drug cartels, but it turned out to be a party balloon. However, the incident highlighted significant concerns over both the cartels’ regular practice of using basic store-bought drones to deliver drugs into the U.S. and monitor trafficking routes north of the border. It also shed light on the U.S. Army’s laser technology to fight those drones, which had not previously been known to the public. It was being tested by Border Patrol this week, but neither the military nor CBP flagged its use to the FAA, which shut down the airport out of an abundance of caution. Former FBI Special Agent Tracy Walder, who also piloted drones for the CIA, and former Yuma County Border Patrol Chief Chris Clem, break down all the developments and look at the bigger issues with the story.
