Did Israel Start the Six-Day War?

The Six-Day War is often described as if it began suddenly.

But the events leading up to it tell a different story.

Before the war:

• Syrian-backed groups carried out cross-border raids into Israel

• Syrian forces engaged in artillery fire and air clashes

• In April 1967, Israeli jets shot down Syrian aircraft during escalation

Then Egypt dramatically raised the stakes:

• Gamal Abdel Nasser moved tens of thousands of troops into Sinai

• Expelled UN peacekeepers, removing a key buffer

• Closed the Strait of Tiran, cutting off Israel’s Red Sea access

The Strait of Tiran was considered an international waterway, and its closure was widely seen as an act of war.

At the same time:

• Egypt formed a defense pact with Jordan

• Iraqi forces moved into the region

Israel now faced the possibility of a coordinated multi-front war.

The conflict didn’t appear overnight.

It was the result of escalating tensions and strategic moves on multiple sides.
