Martin Escobari-Martin Escobari is Co-President of General Atlantic, has deployed over $5 billion into India, and grew up in a country that experienced 35,000% inflation, eleven presidents in a decade, and three coups before he turned twenty. He says the survivors of entrepreneurship are almost always people with a wound — intergenerational trauma, lost fortunes, public failure, something that won't let them sit still — and that the great fortunes of the next twenty years will be built in four places: AI, healthcare, the energy transition, and the new consumer in the global south. I brought in Aryan, a 21-year-old who cold emailed Sam Altman from India and now lives with the founder of 1X, and asked Martin to teach us both — from a 20-year-old's lens and a 40-year-old's lens. We got into why he thinks America is becoming more like Bolivia than the other way around, why India needs role models who built without cutting corners, why the most important question an investor can ask a founder is "why are you doing this." Also: a near-death internet company in Brazil, a $25 million takeover that walked away at the altar, and an India deal in 2003 that almost happened four years before Flipkart.
