What if the modern food crisis didn't begin with McDonald's?
What if it began when we turned food into an industrial product?
From White Castle and McDonald's to KFC, supermarkets, frozen dinners, drive-throughs and today's delivery apps, the way we eat has been transformed by one powerful idea:
Convenience.
Industrialization made food faster, more standardized and easier to distribute. It also created an environment where highly processed, highly convenient food became incredibly accessible.
And now we're living with the consequences.
U.S. adult obesity has risen dramatically since the 1960s. At the same time, ultra-processed foods have become a much larger part of modern diets, while our work, transportation, lifestyles and relationship with cooking have changed.
But there's another paradox.
The food that was once celebrated as cheap and convenient is becoming increasingly expensive.
And while traditional food preparation home gardens, farmers' markets, sourdough, fermentation and cooking from scratch is increasingly marketed as a premium lifestyle, the people with the least time and money are often the most dependent on convenience.
Then came another extraordinary development:
Ozempic and the GLP-1 revolution.
Are we now using medicine to help manage some of the consequences of the same modern food environment we've spent decades building?
This isn't a conspiracy theory about McDonald's secretly making people sick.
It's a deeper question about economics, industrialization, time, class, marketing, health and the incentives that shape what becomes cheap, convenient and available.
Because perhaps the real question isn't:
"Why don't people just eat healthier?"
Perhaps it's:
"Who designed the choices?"
Watch until the end because the next stage of the food industry may not look like junk food at all.
It may look like health.
