as posted by the channelMustafa Ahmed was two years old in 2004 when he lost his leg in a U.S. air strike in Fallujah, Iraq. He was unable to get the medical care he needed, but his luck turned when a U.S.-based non-profit group brought him and his father to Portland, Ore. for treatment. Mustafa and his dad formed a strong bond with the people there, and when he returned to Iraq, Mustafa stayed in touch with his American friends. Eventually, though, they became unable to reach him. When ISIS took Fallujah, the people in Portland feared the worst. But NPR's Jane Arraf was in Fallujah on the day ISIS fell in 2016, and she met a teenage boy with one leg named Mustafa. His life was about to change again.
