Hakeem Jeffries, the new leader of House Democrats, insists his side will prevail in a standoff over raising the federal debt limit.

Jeffries told us that Democrats will not pay "a ransom note" simply for meeting the country's financial obligations. But he added, "We are not going to let the car go off the cliff," meaning the federal government will not default on its debt. Republicans who control the House refuse to raise the limit without negotiating a long-term balanced budget. Democrats and the White House have refused to negotiate.

"We will find a vehicle legislatively," Jeffries said, that allows Democrats to vote with "a handful of reasonable Republicans" to save the country from economic calamity.
