0:31Now PlayingMore than a hundred endangered tortoises have been returned to Tanzania from Thailand as evidence in a case against a wildlife smuggling network, the international criminal police organization Interpol said Friday.
The reptiles – 116 in all – were discovered hidden in the luggage of a Ukrainian woman at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport more than two years ago. Since then, 98 of them have died, but all were handed over for use in criminal proceedings, Interpol said. The tortoises included endangered or vulnerable species, such as pancake tortoises, radiated tortoises and Aldabra giant tortoises.
The smuggler fled Thailand but was eventually tracked down and arrested in Bulgaria. Fourteen other suspects have also been detained in an operation involving officers from Thai and Tanzanian police as well as Interpol.
The surviving tortoises will be quarantined and looked after while experts assess whether they can be returned to their natural habitat.
