U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen held a face-to-face meeting yesterday with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man illegally deported to a mega-prison in El Salvador by the Trump administration.

In an interview, the junior Democratic senator from Maryland said Salvadoran soldiers initially prevented him from reaching the prison:

“They simply said they had been given orders not to allow me to visit him,” he told NPR.

Later in the day, El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, posted on X that Van Hollen had met with Abrego Garcia, adding that Abrego Garcia “gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody.”
