At least half a million people in Gaza are starving and the territory risks being plunged into famine, according to a UN-backed report issued by dozens of experts on hunger. NPR spent time with a starving single mother in Gaza City to document the family's struggles for survival.

Israel is severely restricting food supplies into Gaza and trying to control its distribution, saying it's to prevent Hamas from benefiting. International aid groups say it amounts to collective punishment. Gaza's Health Ministry says more than 400 people have been killed by Israeli fire trying to reach food aid since late March.
