0:38Now PlayingNew Mexico's governor has declared a state of emergency after the city of Ruidoso was hit by devastating flash flooding Tuesday.
Fatalities include a man in his 40s, a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy who were caught in rushing floodwaters. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
The flash flooding began Tuesday afternoon when heavy rain fell on an area scorched in last year’s wildfires. Emergency crews conducted over 50 swift-water rescues. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state is mobilizing every resource it has and will need federal support to recover from the disaster.
She added that Ruidoso deserves the same urgent response as Texas’ received for its devastating flooding that killed over 100 people last week.
