1:00Now PlayingNew York Gov. Kathy Hochul is endorsing Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayor’s race.
Mamdani, who describes himself as a Democratic Socialist, won the Democratic mayoral primary in June, but some top Democratic leaders have kept their distance. Mamdani has been sharply critical of Israel’s war in Gaza and once endorsed the idea of defunding the NYPD, though he has walked back that stance.
In her endorsement in a New York Times essay, Hochul said she and Mamdani “had our disagreements,” but Hochul said Mamdani wants a safe affordable New York City. The governor also commended Mamdani, who is Muslim, for meeting with Jewish community leaders across the city.
