The White House is clarifying President Trump’s remarks about Iran — and the need for its unconditional surrender — to end U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against the country.

Trump has said he would settle for nothing short of unconditional surrender and that the U.S. needed to be part of the selection of an acceptable leader. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Trump did not expect that the Iranian regime "come out and say that themselves." She says he meant that when Iran no longer poses a credible threat to the U.S., that’s when he would determine the end of U.S. operations.

Meanwhile, a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll finds that most Americans oppose the U.S. and Israeli war in Iran — 56% say that they’re against the military action; just 36% approve of Trump’s handling of the war; and 55% say that they see Iran as only a minor threat or no threat at all.
