The new No. 1 supercomputer is called LineShine, or ling1sheng4 in Chinese. It sits in the city of Shenzhen, and its debut on the list bumps the Lawrence Livermore National Lab’s “El Capitan” supercomputer down to No. 2. The Chinese system was clocked doing a blistering 2.198 exaflops — or 2 quintillion, 198 quadrillion calculations per second. The Shenzhen supercomputing center says China’s return to the top of the supercomputer list marks a new era in supercomputing.
