Scott Winters says he suffered a near-fatal pulmonary embolism last year after turning to ChatGPT about his health problems. He says the chatbot discouraged him from seeking medical care for his symptoms and gave him dangerous recommendations — including about taking prescription drugs.
The lawsuit, filed in California state court, alleges OpenAI safeguards meant to urge people to seek professional advice failed Winters.
OpenAI says in a statement that ChatGPT should not be used as a substitute for medical care, diagnosis or treatment.
