The Trump administration has long accused vandals of damaging the pool’s liner. But the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia moved Friday to dismiss the case against a former Olympian who was indicted last month. Prosecutors said new evidence points to a rushed paint job. Then they dropped misdemeanor charges against three other people. President Trump pushed back on prosecutors’ assessment, continuing to blame vandalism.
The decision put Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, a Trump appointee and a longtime political ally of the president, at odds with Trump. The two met at the White House on Monday. Shortly after, Trump told reporters that he was unhappy with her office’s decision: "Frankly, I think she choked."
Trump did not answer a reporter's question about whether he was reconsidering Pirro's role.
