1:03Now PlayingResearchers have used the largest and most powerful solar telescope to see the surface of the sun in stunning new detail. The new images reveal whirlpools of plasma — a boiling brew of hot and magnetized charged particles.
Friedrich Wöger and his colleagues at the National Solar Observatory noticed that when different layers of plasma move past one another at different speeds, they generate subtle disturbances that grow into large, swirling vortices. The turbulence occurs on the edges of magnetic features on the solar surface, which are pretty much everywhere. These vortices may help fuel explosive solar events that influence space weather and can impact satellites and power grids.
