Reproductive Justice and Gender-Based Violence in NYC after Roe Panel Discussion | 11.28.22

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the NYC Commission on Gender Equity hosted a panel discussion to illustrate how policies denying people autonomy over their bodies, including restrictions on reproductive healthcare and gender-affirming care, amount to gender-based violence. The discussion covers how the proliferation of such policies across the country, including the overturning of Roe, contribute to a culture that normalizes the coercion and control of certain bodies. Panelists share ways in which NYC is responding to this crisis, discuss how New York City as a safe haven is affected, and provide information on what attendees can do to support the movement to protect and advance reproductive justice and combat this form of gender-based violence.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual campaign beginning November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ending on December 10, Human Rights Day. Since its founding in 1991, the campaign has become an international movement to prevent and eliminate GBV.
