as posted by the channelDuring OceanXplorer’s latest expedition, scientists discovered a brine pool in the northern Red Sea. A brine pool is an undersea "lake" of extremely salty water that has seeped through cracks in the earth's crust and been superheated by magma, full of methane and hydrogen sulfide.
The discovery is exciting for a whole bunch of reasons: the Red Sea is a very young sea.
Discovering a feature like a brine pool, in a young sea that’s still quite active, gives us a window into how Earth’s oceans formed.
Brine pools could also help us find life elsewhere in the universe. Despite their seemingly-inhospitable chemical makeup, brine pools host lots of specially-adapted life around and within them.
Brine pools occur near hydrothermal vents, and are thought to be the type of habitat where life on earth originated. As we search for life elsewhere in the universe, scientists are focusing their search on moons and planets that are thought to have hydrothermal vent systems like the ones here.
We’ll be replaying the ROV footage from this dive and getting the full download from the scientists who led this mission. Dr. Sam Purkis is a professor and chair of the Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Miami-RSMAS. Mattie Rodrigue is the Science Program Lead at Oceanx.
