Coral reefs are often called the canary in the coal mine -- they’re extremely sensitive to slight changes in ocean conditions, and a leading indicator for how other ecosystems will respond to a changing climate. They’ve been around for 400 million years, but now they’re on track to disappear within a few decades.

The corals in the Red Sea could hold the key to preserving other reefs, because they live in very warm, very salty water--conditions that mimic what the global ocean will look like in the coming decades. If we can figure out what mechanisms Red Sea corals use to thrive, scientists are hopeful we can take that knowledge and apply it to save coral reefs around the world.

From aboard the OceanXplorer during its maiden mission to the Red Sea, marine scientist Dr. Sam Purkis opens up about the frightening discoveries he makes studying the health of Red Sea coral reefs (including submarine dives up to 700 meters), and what they mean for the future of the ocean, and what he wants Gen-Z and future generations to know about what it will take to turn this around.
