YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe #RedSea is ecologically rich, but relatively unexplored.
In the Gulf of Aqaba, in the northern Red Sea, #coral scientist Dr. Francesca Benzoni joins us on the #OceanXplorer to survey the coral species inhabiting shallow reefs all the way down to the deep sea. On this expedition, the twilight zone (or mesophotic zone, the layer between sunlit, shallow water and deep water where no light penetrates at all) has some surprises in store: an abundant and diverse coral community that was previously unknown.
The mesophotic zone occurs at depths from 30 to 150 meters (100 to 492 feet) beneath the surface and is replete with both corals adapted to sunlight as well as those adapted to the darkness of the deep.
Dr. Benzoni is one of the world's leading coral researchers, and this type of survey has rarely been done in such warm waters or at such a scale. The findings will prove critical in the fight to protect marine habitats!
