Learn about what it takes to study these harsh ocean environments and how genomic tools are being used to better understand the diversity and function of organisms inhabiting these deep dark habitats.
Here are some key terms that will be good to know:
- Hydrothermal vents: Think “underwater geyser, or hot spring”, which are found at the bottom of the ocean near volcanically active areas, such as mid-ocean ridges host complex biological communities fueled by chemosynthetic organisms.
- Environmental DNA (eDNA): nuclear or mitochondrial DNA that is released from an organism into the environment.
- Chemosynthesis: process by which some microbes turn carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates using energy obtained from inorganic chemical reactions.
