They are one of the most abundant vertebrates on the planet with their biomass exceeding that of all other fish in the deep sea combined. Lanternfish are so numerous they appear as a distinct layer on echo sounders - a phenomenon known as the deep scattering layer. In the Red Sea, the abundance of these fish is something of a mystery as the basin was traditionally thought of as “unproductive." On OceanXplorer's 2022 expedition, Carlos Duarte set out to discover the secrets to the success of the lanternfish in the Red Sea.
