In these turquoise waters, fishermen are making individual and collective decisions that affect the diversity and productivity of the fisheries. Like so many places in the region, poverty, access to credit and markets, and political forces are creating complex governance dynamics that impede the ability of fisheries to be managed sustainably.
Organized by a local nonprofit, a group of old-timers and young fishers have formed a collective to bypass unsustainable shortcuts. By giving up outdated techniques, they are deploying FADs to lessen the impacts on nearshore ecosystems and are also working with the markets to diversify their buyers.
