YouTube Description
as posted by the channelNorway might not be the first country that springs to mind when you think of coral... but think again.
Norway has one of the longest coastlines in the world, and in the depths of its fjords and rocky coasts lies a hidden world teeming with life and color.
Norway boasts the highest density of deep-sea coral reefs on the planet, which thrive in the cool, nutrient-rich currents of the Norwegian Sea.
The corals that thrive in these depths are different from their shallow-water cousins – they don’t use sunlight to survive.
Instead, they capture food particles and small organisms floating in the water using their tentacles. This allows them to thrive in the dark and cold.
These coral colonies can live for thousands of years, but they grow extremely slowly – some of them as slow as a few millimeters per year, which makes them extremely vulnerable to human impacts like deep-sea trawling.
Exploring and mapping the depths that these corals call home will allow us to better protect them for the future of our planet. Thanks to MAREANO for their maps and fact-checking on this video!
