0:43Now PlayingRare footage shows deep-sea predation, as an Atlantic Midshipman fish (Porichthys plectrodon) laid in wait before grabbing a barracudina when it came too close. This fish has some of the fastest strikes of any fish and is an ambush hunter, sitting and waiting to attack. The predator pulled the prey back into its burrow, leaving behind swirling sand.
The video, captured during @noaaoceanexploration‘s Windows to the Deep mission, was taken about 25 miles off the coast of North Carolina. It shows the food-chain relationships between bottom dwellers and fish that travel the water column.
