Tripod fish are deep sea fish that have three long fins that they rest on the seafloor, supporting their bodies like they are on a tripod. They appear to do this so that they can stay in one spot, facing into the current, so that prey will drift into their mouths.
As adults, they will live near the seafloor. But as larvae, they will drift much closer to the surface and look entirely different with large, rounded fins, instead of their three long namesake fins. It's thought that the large, rounded fins help the larvae mimic a jellyfish and deter predators from eating them.
