The illness, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes fever, intense joint pain, headaches, muscle aches, swelling, and rashes. There is no specific treatment, and care is supportive only. In rare cases, the disease can be fatal, particularly among elderly individuals and those with weakened immune systems. Chinese authorities have launched an aggressive response including drone surveillance, insecticide spraying, deployment of mosquito-eating fish, and strict enforcement measures to remove stagnant water. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 travel alert for affected regions, urging travelers to take enhanced precautions by avoiding mosquito bites through repellent, protective clothing, and screened or air-conditioned lodging. The U.S. Department of State maintains a Level 2 Advisory for Mainland China due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bans, urging travelers to exercise increased caution.
