CONDUCT RECONNAISSANCE
Simply stated. Step 5 is about getting an idea of your objective area, whatever that may be. If you're redoing the landscape in your backyard, you should take measurements, draw sketches, and plan exactly where (and when) you're putting the upgrades.
Suppose you are a team leader conducting direct action on a target compound. In that case, you'll scrutinize updated imagery and real-time video from ISR and ask your intelligence professionals to give you as much information as possible to ensure your plan will work. Something as small as illumination or weather could cause catastrophic mission failure; Step 5 is where we ensure that doesn't happen.
