While the term “gerrymander” has been around since the early years of the republic, new technology, big data and big money have allowed governors and legislatures to perfect the process in ways that have never before been imagined. Is the practice making us more divided?
Tonight's debater for the motion David Daley, author of Ratf**ked, explains how the GOP's "unprecedented effort to control governorships and state legislative bodies" in 2010 redrew congressional districts so that the party could turn the House into a firewall against the Democrats.
Debating against the motion is top tactician on the Republican State Leadership Committee Chris Jankowski, who has said that gerrymandering is "a natural consequence of both parties playing by the rules and maximizing their advantage.”
