In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the problem with consumerism. Specifically, the video looks at how consumerism and consumption levels negate the environmental benefits of sustainable green growth. As we consume and consume, our consumption levels of materials and energy go up, requiring a larger renewable energy transition to cover. With holidays like Christmas and Black Friday imploring consumers to buy more with deals and advertisements galore. The problem with consumerism, consumption, our materialistic obsessions, and a capitalist growth-centered is that it blocks the amazing progress we've made on the energy efficiency and renewables front. Ultimately, consumerism and consumption must be corrected by a state of deconsumption, degrowth, and minimalism in rich countries. Contracting consumption rates and embracing degrowth, minimalism, and essentialism will make a transition to a 100% renewable world that much better.
