Craig Murray begins by highlighting that he has walked through hundred of people demonstrating against Julian Assange whereas the night before John Bolton, a war criminal responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq, was speaking at the Union and no one was outside making a stand. His point is that some people have their values seriously messed up.
He goes on to say that we need organisations like WikiLeaks because we can no longer trust governments who bend the truth to achieve their own goals. Wikileaks is necessary for exposing cruel acts governments inflict on other countries and to make people aware that public opinion is controlled by the media.
ABOUT CRAIG MURRAY:
Craig John Murray is a British political activist, former ambassador to Uzbekistan and former Rector of the University of Dundee. While at the embassy in Tashkent, he accused the Karimov administration of human rights abuses, a step which, he argued, was against the wishes of the British government and the reason for his removal. Murray complained to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in November 2002, January or early February 2003, and in June 2004 that intelligence linking the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan to al-Qaeda, suspected of being gained through torture, was unreliable, immoral, and illegal. He described this as "selling our souls for dross".
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY:
The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
