Artur Mas was President of Catalonia for five years, serving until 2016. A Barcelonian by birth and an economist by training, Mas is viewed as economically liberal but a moderate on social questions. As President, he navigated the complexities of minority government and was the foremost advocate for Catalonian independence from Spain, driving his party towards secessionism. Mas was charged by Spain’s Attorney-General for organising an unconstitutional referendum in Catalonia, which overwhelmingly supported leaving Spain
