The Motion: Is the West Losing in The Struggle with Russia?
At the start of Vladimir Putin's presidency in 2000, Russia seemed to be taking a path out of the Cold War and towards a harmonious coexistence with the West. But from Ukraine to the UK, a newly confident Russia tests its strength and that of the existing international order. Are these the manoeuvres of a resurgent superpower, or the desperate moves of a vulnerable regime? Can the West respond with sanctions and diplomacy, or is a new strategy needed to face a new Russian threat?
