The Motion: This House Believes We Have Not Remembered Them.

One hundred years on from the end of one of the bloodiest chapters in human history, the legacy of the Great War is still apparent, from the perennial poppies to the poetry of Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, and Wilfred Owen. Yet, how far has the promise of “lest we forget” been kept? Have we romanticised remembrance beyond recognition, a mere shadow of what the fallen are truly owed? Or, 100 years on, are the lessons of 1918 remembered more potently than ever?

Major General Nicholas Caplin CB is a retired British Army Officer and the Chief Executive of Blind Veterans UK since 2014.
